My wife believes I am having an affair with my home business. She has often accused me of spending all my time and extra money in pursuit of an income from home and she has at times become tired and impatient with me, even to the point of demanding that I “swear to give it up”.
Yet, I have persisted in my folly and at times have spent more than a little to maintain my presence online. Besides owning a couple of Domains, I pay for Autoships, Membership Fees, Hosting, Autoresponders, Marketing Tools, and my ISP Account.
So why do I insist on aggravating my spouse since it causes so much discord in my marriage and creates tension with my kids? After all, the money I invest every month could easily pay for a car or a four wheeler note, or do much needed repairs around home.
The short answer is… I know what my “Why” is. A more business-like answer to the question might be: I know my Mission Statement for my Home Business. Back in the 80’s I worked for a couple of different businesses that were big on developing and teaching their Mission Statements to their Employees. We spent several months in long – sometimes day long sessions – brainstorming about our Company Values. From the information we gathered in these sessions, we developed a brief statement about what we determined our Mission to be. The ensuing Mission Statement was then printed on signs and brochures for dissemination to Customers as a reminder to us Employees as to how we were to conduct business and why we did what we did.
The “Why” provides motivation and becomes the single-most driving force that will keep a business going or take it out. My “Why” is so wrapped up in my family, that it could easily make me quit MLM IF the focus is on immediate goals instead of long term goals. Ultimately I want a harmonious and peaceful environment at home absent the financial stress that is usually at the base of arguments and hurt feelings. When the significant others in my life perceive that I would rather throw money away than buy a car or four wheeler, or remodel the kitchen and replace the roof, the fix could easily be in filling that temporary desire instead of sacrificing the now for later.
So… my “Why” is very personal and more permanent than the short term goals I used to think were my driving force. My Mission Statement if you will, is stated for myself and is in terms that help me to understand that I can not get what I really want any other way. I could state my “Why” here, but I am content to know what it is and remind myself daily. In so remembering I WILL NEVER QUIT MLM and I also put the reader of this article on Notice that until you know your “Why”, you will only be in business until it is more convenient not to be. Do not make the mistake of thinking your short term goals are your “Why”. They are mere baby steps on the road to your ultimate destination. The sacrifices required by your determination to succeed and their rewards will fund your way and make success possible only if you know that what you really seek is not yet accessible.
